Does anyone know about renting bicycles in either Denver or Ft. Collins that would work for the tour?

Are you sure you really want to go screaming down a mountain at 50+MPH on a bike you've never riden, on a bike that you don't know the maintenance history on? Are you sure you want to spend a week and 400 miles riding a bike you only met an hour ago?

Besides that... I'm betting it will cost you at least $400-$500 to rent a bike built with teh quality you need for such a trip.

I would suggest shipping your personal bike out. It will be cheaper and probably easier than renting. What is easier than having your own bike ready to ride at the start and picked up at the end and shipped home for you? And you will be comfortable on your own bike!!

For the 2003 BTC there was an excellent bike shop in Colorado Springs - Criterium Bicycle, that rented out bikes for the tour. A friend of mine rented a bike from them, I believe it cost somewhere around $125 or $150 for the week. It was a brand new Specialized road bike and it worked out just fine.

Maybe BTC will have another bike shop in the Ft. Collins area set up for the 2004 tour to rent bikes.

I also rented from the Criterium bike shop last year and it was great. It was a nicer bike than I would have brought with me, it was in great mechanical condition, and I had no problems. It was cheaper than shipping my bike and easier than schlepping my bike on the plane.
I have rented bikes several times when I have come out to Colorado to do some biking, from several differnt shops, and it has always been fine.
I hope the BTC finds a good bike shop in Ft Collins for the 2004 tour.

I rented a bike from a local shop in Boulder for a tour 2 years ago. It was the best decision for me at the time. It worked out great! The total cost was only around $80 for a new Lemond. I would suggest calling around to shops in Fort Collins. Good luck, and have a great tour!

Wherever possible I would transport my own bike, especialy for a tour that is full of intensity such as this. I would only rent one if I had to.
