Pagosa Springs is known for its geological history and its hot springs but there is more to it than that. Pagosa Springs is actually located within the San Juan National Forest, which is over 3 million acres making it an excellent hiking, biking, camping, or horseback riding area. The springs that come up are perfect for fishing too. Places like East Fork of the San Juan and Echo Canyon Reservoir offer excellent fishing opportunities.
If you like boating while you fish then you should definitely visit Navajo State Park. Its the home of Navajo State Reservoir and offers boat rentals as well as campsites for overnight fun. Canoeing can be done at either, Echo Canyon, Williams Creek, Big Meadow or Alberta Park Reservoirs. When the water is high on the San Juan River it is excellent for whitewater activities like rafting or kayaking. When the water level is lower its a nice relaxing float down the San Juan River. Enjoy the day floating down the river without having to worry about shuttles by having Ski and Bow Rack or Pagosa Outside make the arrangements for you.
Another good way to relax is to play a game of golf. Pagosa Springs Golf Club has the best scenic views of any golf course, with the San Juan Mountains in the background and tall ponderosa pines surrounding the course. You can always just climb aboard one of the three scenic trains Pagosa Springs has to offer and travel through a little bit of history with a whole lot of beautiful scenery.
But despite all the beautiful views you can see from the ground Pagosa Springs offers an another view of the amazing landscape. Hop into a hot air balloon and go up, up, up. Rocky Mountain Balloon Adventures or Wind Wranglers Balloon Company will get you there. While in Pagosa Springs you must visit the San Juan Historical Museum because it greatly portrays the way the pioneers of Pagosa Springs lived in the late 19th century. Mesa Verde National Park takes you back farther into Pagosa Springs history when the pueblo people inhabited the area. The Pueblo Indians created the structures at the Chimney Rock National Monument and offers guided tours.
