Pagosa Springs is known for its geological history and its hot springs but there is more to it than that. Pagosa Springs is located within the San Juan National Forest, which is over 3 million acres making it an excellent hiking, biking, camping, or horseback riding area.
Spanish for "little Anthony", Antonito was first called San Antonio Junction. Founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW;) Railroad in 1880, Antonito is located in the south central part of Conejos County. When the railroad was extending south from Alamosa, company officials failed to get the desired concessions at the old town of Conejos.
The name Alamosa comes from the Spanish adjective Alamosa, meaning "of cottonwood", for the cottonwood forests which grow along the Rio Grande and throughout town. This city is the commercial center of the San Luis Valley.
Salida is home of Hot Springs and Cool Mountains in the Colorado "banana belt!" We are the "unpretentious, bike friendly town" as designated by Outside Magazine. Salida is centered among and protected by the Sawatch mountain range to the northwest, Sangre de Cristo mountain range to the south, and the Mosquito mountain range to the north.
When visiting Gunnison, Colorado you will not only get rich history but also spectacular views. It offers historic sites like the Alpine Tunnel which was built in 1888 and is the first tunnel ever to be constructed through the Continental Great Divide.
This farming hub raises potatoes, alfalfa and carrots, but has become famous for another agricultural product of Coors barley. The world's largest single-site brewery, Miller Coors, based in Golden, Colorado, relies on the farms around Monte Vista to produce special barley for its Rocky Mountain-style beer.
The Bicycle Tour of Colorado will have a shuttle bus service in most overnight towns. The BTC shuttle bus will stop at the grocery store, the beer garden/band/entertainment, and the pool (if there is one) from early afternoon into the evening. The route in each town will be included in your tour map book which you will receive June 17th at BTC Check-In.
