When visiting Gunnison, Colorado you will not only get rich history but also spectacular views. It offers historic sites like the Alpine Tunnel which was built in 1888 and is the first tunnel ever to be constructed through the Continental Great Divide. The tunnel was built to be a faster way to transport cargo to and from Gunnison directly. Gunnison is actually named after J.W. Gunnison who was traveling west searching for the transcontinental railroad route. With the help of the railroad Gunnison was able to prosper but the small towns not on the path of the railroad suffered. Most of them became ghost towns like the Town of Gothic where the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory has resided since 1928.
Once you’ve learned the history its time to see the sights and Gunnison has the most amazing views. The Silver Scenic byway offers the view of five of Colorado’s highest peaks, reaching over 14,000ft. These “fourteeners” can be seen in all their glory by visiting the Windy Point Overlook. The Crystal Mill is another site to see, with its picturesque beauty and visual appeal it is one of the most photographed sites in Colorado. If rock climbing, hiking, or kayaking is something that interests you then Taylor Canyon is the stop for you. It offers the Taylor river that runs through the Taylor Canyon, which have granite cliffs which are great for climbing, and is said to be one of the best scenic canyons in Colorado.
The best landmark of all of Gunnison would be the Black Canyon which is located in Gunnison National Park. There is no other canyon like it in the United States. Although dangerous, The Black Canyon offers the adventure to camp in the backcountry of the canyon, under the stars. They also offer hiking inside and along the rim of the canyon. If camping is not what you are looking for crested butte is only 8 miles away and offers a full resort. Gunnison also offers a wide selection of restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining.
