Montrose stands before the San Juan Mountains and the Black Canyon to the east. Since 1882 the town of Montrose has served as a gateway to Western Colorado. It is a great family city with plenty of playgrounds, parks and trails. The Black Canyon National Park is a must visit for those who have never seen it It is 2,700 feet deep and 53 miles long. Gain memories that will last a lifetime by hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, rafting, and backpacking throughout the area.
In 1909 the Gunnison Tunnel was constructed, it used water from the Gunnison River in the Black Canyon to the Uncompahgre Valley. The Uncompahgre Project is one of the oldest projects constructed by the US Bureau of Reclamation; it helped turn Montrose into Colorado’s agricultural hotspot. Today the Gunnison Tunnel is used for recreation. Kayakers know the surfing spot as the M-wave .
If you like mountain biking, then Montrose is the place for you! There are several paved bike routes throughout the city. Within a 20 mile radius there are trails for every skill level. They have relaxing flat land rides with an amazing view. Or steep mountain climbs, for the tougher more rigorous rides. Montrose is an ideal place to spend a family vacation.
