Ouray offers the best view of the Rockies by being nestled within the Uncompaghre Valley with 13,000ft peaks of the San Juan Mountains surrounding it. Ouray was formed over a million years ago as volcanic eruptions resulted in large lava formed craters. Because of its location and the spectacular views Ouray has been a stopping point for many world travelers over the past 100 years. Whether your interest is hiking, biking, horseback riding, four wheeling, rafting or climbing Ouray has something fun for everyone.
The San Juan Skyway is an easy way to find historical landmarks while capturing the great views of the San Juan Mountains. The skyway spans from 6,200ft to 11,000ft and travels through the tallest mountain peaks in the United States, reaching over 14,000ft. From the skyway you can see authentic Ghost Towns, mines, cattle ranches, and various wilderness areas. Learn the history behind the legendary Chief Ouray of the Ute tribe. They were a nomadic tribe that settled in the area and relied on keeping the peace amongst his people. Because of his courage and leadership the people of Ouray highly respect him. More can be learned about the Ute tribe and Chief Ouray by visiting either the Ouray County Historical Museum or the Ute Indian Museum.
The best feature of Ouray and perhaps the most talked about is the Hot Springs Pool. It’s sulfer-free and contains an area suited for any activity. There is a diving area, lap swimming area, a shallow area for children, a large slide and an area to play water volleyball. If a pool is not your style and like a little more private setting natural hot springs are numerous in Ouray, They bubble up along the Uncompaghre River and are under intense heat and pressure making them sulfer-free and odorless. In order to get a good night’s sleep and be ready for the next day of fun Ouray offers hotels, motels, cabins, campsites or beds and breakfasts to suit your needs. Enjoy the local cuisine at places like Beaumont Grill, Ouray Brewery, or the Outlaw Restaurant.
