Durango draws numerous tourists annually because of the endless amount of outdoor activities and the scenic beauty. With over two million acres of natural forest, Durango is the ideal location for mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, horse back riding, rock climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting.

One of Durango’s most popular attractions is a nine hour train ride in a vintage steam locomotive. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was originally used to haul metals through abandoned mines, mountains, and forest. The train ride goes along side the Animas River, and reaches over 14,000 feet in the snowy mountain caps.

In the San Juan Mountains there are several hot springs that have been formed due to ancient volcanic activity. Some of the springs are commercially owned while others are more private, but require a long hike.

The Animas River is a kayaker and rafter’s dream for both beginners and experts. For those new to the river, Durango has numerous rafting companies with guides that can make the trip to Durango a memorable one. For the more advance rafters there is a class V on the upper part of the river, with flows over 2,500 cubic feet per second. Rafters beware this class V is extremely difficult and is intended for experienced rafters only.

Go check out one of the first parks of its kind, the Mesa Verde National Park was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 to preserve the works of man. The park occupies over 52,000 acres of the Colorado Plateau. With over 4,700 archeological sites, Mesa Verde is a great reminder of ancient culture. Over 1,400 years ago an ancient civilization called the Ancestral Puebloans thrived in the area for over 700 years. When the civilization left the area they left behind evidence of advanced understanding in both architecture and agriculture.
